Lift Director Training Requirements and who needs it
Why Lift Director Training Is Essential for Safe and Compliant Crane Operations

Learn why Lift Director Training is important, when OSHA and state rules may require lift director oversight, and how KARM Safety Solutions’ online training helps crews work safer.
Crane and rigging work is one of the highest-risk activities on many construction and industrial jobsites. A single missed detail in lift planning, communication, rigging, crane setup, or load control can lead to dropped loads, equipment failure, serious injuries, and costly project delays.
That is why Lift Director Training is so important.
A Lift Director is responsible for helping plan, coordinate, and oversee lifting operations. This person helps make sure the lift is properly reviewed, the crew understands their roles, hazards are identified, and the operation is performed safely from start to finish.
KARM Safety Solutions offers online Lift Director & Critical Lift Training for employers, supervisors, crane crews, riggers, signal persons, safety managers, and anyone involved in planning or overseeing lifting operations.

What Does a Lift Director Do?
A Lift Director plays a key role in coordinating the people, equipment, and procedures involved in a lift. Depending on the jobsite and the type of lift, this may include:
- Reviewing the lift plan
- Confirming the load weight and crane capacity
- Verifying crane setup and site conditions
- Coordinating riggers, signal persons, crane operators, and supervisors
- Identifying hazards such as power lines, unstable ground, poor visibility, or limited clearance
- Making sure communication is clear before and during the lift
- Stopping work when unsafe conditions exist
For routine lifts, a trained Lift Director helps keep operations organized. For critical lifts, multiple-crane lifts, or complex lifts, the role becomes even more important.
When Is Lift Director Training Required by OSHA?
Federal OSHA does not generally require a specific “Lift Director certification” for every crane lift. However, OSHA does require certain lifting operations to be directed by qualified or competent personnel.
Under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1432, multiple-crane or multiple-derrick lifts must be directed by a person who meets the criteria for both a competent person and a qualified person, or by a competent person assisted by one or more qualified persons, identified as the lift director. OSHA also requires the lift director to review the lift plan in a meeting with all workers involved in the operation.
This means that for tandem lifts and other multiple-crane or derrick operations, employers must ensure the person directing the lift has the knowledge, training, and experience needed to perform the role safely.
State and Local Lift Director Requirements
In addition to federal OSHA requirements, some states and local jurisdictions have more specific Lift Director rules.
For example, Washington State requires a Lift Director to meet qualification requirements before using a crane or equipment to perform hoisting activities. Washington’s rule also states that a Lift Director is required to be present and directly oversee all work performed by a crane and associated rigging crew.
KARM Safety Solutions also offers Washington-focused Lift Director training for companies that need to meet Washington L&I expectations.

New York City also has specific Lift Director registration requirements for certain crane and derrick activities, including when a crane or derrick is picking a load or traveling at the site.
Because requirements can vary by state, city, jobsite, contract, and type of lift, employers should always review the applicable OSHA, state-plan, local, and project-specific requirements before crane operations begin.
Why Lift Director Training Matters
Lift Director Training helps prevent accidents by improving planning, communication, and accountability. A trained Lift Director understands that a safe lift is not just about operating the crane. It is about making sure every part of the operation works together.
Proper training can help crews:
- Reduce dropped-load incidents
- Improve communication between operators, riggers, and signal persons
- Recognize critical lift conditions
- Identify jobsite hazards before the lift begins
- Understand OSHA and state compliance expectations
- Create better lift plans and pre-lift meetings
- Improve documentation for employer records
For employers, Lift Director Training also helps demonstrate that personnel have received instruction in safe lift planning and jobsite responsibilities.
